The Parkinson's Foundation's article, "Extreme Weather Emergency Preparedness," offers crucial guidance for individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their caregivers to effectively prepare for natural disasters like hurricanes, heatwaves, and power outages.

           Key Recommendations:

            Medication Management:

Ensure an adequate supply of all medications, document dosages and schedules, and keep a comprehensive list of healthcare providers' contact information.

Carry critical items such as a Medical Alert Card and the Hospital Safety Guide to inform emergency responders about specific PD-related needs.

            Power Outage Preparedness:

Stay hydrated to prevent overheating, especially if air conditioning is lost. Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke and manage symptoms like lightheadedness, which can be exacerbated by heat and dehydration.

            Device Management:

For those using devices like deep brain stimulators (DBS) or DUOPA pumps, ensure all equipment is charged and have contingency plans for medication administration if devices become unusable.

Develop a packing list that includes all medications, mobility aids, and necessary medical devices. Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes and shelters, including those equipped to handle medical special needs.

            Mental Health Considerations:

Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation or breathing exercises to manage anxiety, which can worsen PD symptoms during emergencies.

LSVT BIG Exercise: Transforming Movement in Parkinson's Disease

LSVT BIG was developed in the late 1980s to address the movement challenges faced by Parkinson’s patients. Unlike traditional physical therapy, LSVT BIG focuses on enhancing the size and force of movements, helping to counteract the diminished motor function that is characteristic of Parkinson’s disease. The program operates on the principle of ‘use it or lose it,’ promoting expansive movements to improve functional mobility.

A physical therapist plays a crucial role in administering the LSVT BIG program, ensuring that treatments are tailored to the specific needs of individuals with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions.

At the heart of LSVT BIG is a philosophy known as ‘Movement-As-Medicine.’ This approach helps patients recalibrate their movement perceptions, teaching them to recognize the difference between what they feel and how they actually move. By emphasizing bigger movements and more forceful movements, LSVT BIG helps patients integrate these changes into their daily lives, fostering long-lasting improvements in their motor skills.

Educational resources, including webinars and videos, are available to help families and care teams understand and support LSVT treatment. These resources are invaluable in ensuring that patients receive the most effective care possible, making LSVT BIG not just a therapy, but a comprehensive approach to managing Parkinson’s disease.

           Introduction

LSVT BIG raises awareness about its effectiveness in enhancing movement and daily activities for those with Parkinson’s disease. The program is customized to each individual, addressing specific needs and goals to improve mobility and overall quality of life.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder impacting movement, leading to symptoms like tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia (slowness of movement). As the condition progresses, it can severely hinder daily activities for Parkinson’s disease patients, decreasing quality of life. LSVT BIG provides a structured exercise program targeting these motor symptoms, enhancing balance, walking, and overall mobility. Neurological disorders can significantly affect individuals, making early intervention crucial.

The program’s techniques are backed by extensive research and clinical expertise, ensuring that patients receive a high-quality treatment that can make a significant difference in their lives. Participation in LSVT BIG helps individuals with Parkinson’s disease improve motor function, regaining independence and confidence in daily activities.

           Understanding LSVT BIG

Developed in the late 1980s, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG addresses movement challenges faced by Parkinson’s patients. It aims to improve symptoms by enhancing mobility through large, exaggerated movements, counteracting rigidity and slowness.

This innovative therapy is based on the principle of ‘use it or lose it,’ which promotes expansive movements for better functional mobility. By encouraging patients to make larger and more forceful movements, LSVT BIG helps them overcome the diminished motor function that often accompanies Parkinson’s disease. The program emphasizes a ‘Movement-As-Medicine’ philosophy, helping patients recalibrate their movement perceptions and recognize the difference between what they feel and how they actually move.

LSVT BIG includes structured sessions focused on increasing movement amplitude, distinct from traditional physical therapy. Patients integrate larger movements into daily routines, leading to lasting improvements in motor skills. This approach helps individuals with Parkinson’s disease regain normal movement patterns, often diminished by the condition.

LSVT BIG focuses on helping individuals with Parkinson’s disease improve movement patterns by increasing the size and speed of their movements. This approach not only addresses physical symptoms but also empowers patients to take control of their condition and enhance their quality of life.

           How LSVT BIG Works

LSVT BIG focuses on enhancing mobility through large, exaggerated movements to counteract rigidity and slowness. The program emphasizes big, whole-body movements to improve motor functioning, helping patients move more freely and confidently in their daily lives. By concentrating on movement amplitude rather than speed, LSVT BIG addresses the core symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in a unique and effective way.

LSVT BIG involves intensive training emphasizing repetition and high effort to maximize neuroplastic changes in motor function. This retrains the brain and body to perform movements aligned with normal function, improving overall mobility. Sensory recalibration techniques help patients recognize that their ‘big’ movements are actually within normal limits.

Integrating LSVT BIG into daily routines can enhance independence in performing everyday tasks. The overall aim is to reduce the effort required for daily activities, making them more manageable and less exhausting. This approach helps patients maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.

In addition to LSVT BIG, several complementary programs can further enhance the quality of life for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. One such program is

           Rock Steady Boxing

, which focuses on boxing techniques to improve strength, coordination, balance, and confidence. This non-contact boxing program is designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s and has shown significant benefits in improving motor function. A physical therapist can recommend and integrate these complementary programs into a patient's treatment plan to maximize outcomes.

Another complementary program is Pedaling for Parkinson’s, which emphasizes cycling as a therapeutic activity. This program includes a 10-minute warm-up, 40 minutes of pedaling at 80% of maximum heart rate, and a 10-minute cool down, done three times a week to reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s. This structured exercise routine helps improve cardiovascular fitness and mobility in participants.

Dance for Parkinson’s is another excellent program that incorporates dance movements and music to promote physical activity, creative expression, and social engagement for those with the disease. These classes are structured to accommodate varying abilities and focus on enhancing motor skills while fostering a supportive community.

How social interaction benefits Parkinson’s patients

Discover how social interaction enhances the well-being of Parkinson's patients, improving mental health, mobility, and quality of life. Learn more at Parkinson's Programs.

Social interaction plays a crucial role in benefiting Parkinson's patients in various ways. It goes beyond just being a source of companionship; it contributes significantly to their overall well-being and quality of life.

One of the key advantages of social interaction for Parkinson's patients is the emotional support it provides. Dealing with a chronic condition like Parkinson's can often lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. Engaging with others, whether through conversations, support groups, or social events, can help alleviate these negative emotions. It offers a sense of belonging and understanding, reducing the sense of loneliness that some patients may experience.

Furthermore, social interaction can have a positive impact on the cognitive function of Parkinson's patients. Engaging in conversations, participating in group activities, and sharing experiences with others can stimulate the brain and help maintain cognitive abilities. It can enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, which are vital for individuals living with Parkinson's.

Physical benefits also come into play when Parkinson's patients engage socially. Activities such as group exercises, dance classes, or even casual walks with friends can help improve mobility, balance, and coordination. Regular physical activity, combined with social interaction, can contribute to better overall physical health and may even slow down the progression of Parkinson's symptoms.

Moreover, social interactions can provide a platform for sharing experiences, coping strategies, and practical tips for managing Parkinson's symptoms. Patients can learn from each other, exchange information about treatments, and find emotional support in a community that understands their struggles. This exchange of knowledge and experiences can empower individuals to take control of their condition and make informed decisions about their health.

In addition to the direct benefits for patients, social interaction with Parkinson's patients can also have a positive impact on their caregivers and loved ones. It can help reduce the caregiver burden, provide opportunities for respite, and strengthen the support system around the patient. By fostering connections and building a network of support, social interactions can create a more holistic and sustainable care environment for individuals with Parkinson's.

In conclusion, social interaction plays a vital role in enhancing the well-being of Parkinson's patients on multiple levels. From emotional support and cognitive stimulation to physical benefits and shared experiences, engaging with others can positively impact the lives of individuals living with Parkinson's. By promoting social connections and fostering a sense of community, we can help improve the quality of life for those affected by this condition.

Dancing isn't just a fun activity; it's a powerful tool for improving brain health, particularly for those with neurocognitive and movement disorders. The article "Your Brain on Dance" from Reader's Digest highlights the therapeutic benefits of dance for individuals with Parkinson's, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and more. Programs like Dancing With Parkinson’s, founded by Sarah Robichaud, use dance to enhance balance, coordination, and overall quality of life. Studies show that dancing increases brain plasticity, improves motor function, and fosters a sense of community. For more details, check out the full article

If you think dancing is just a hobby, think again! It's a scientifically proven method to boost brain health and improve the lives of those with neurocognitive and movement disorders. The article “Your Brain on Dance” from Reader’s Digest offers compelling evidence on how dance can be a game-changer for individuals with Parkinson’s, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and more.

Picture this: A group of 80 students, many with Parkinson’s, following a modern ballet routine on Zoom. This isn’t just exercise; it’s a lifeline. Sarah Robichaud, the founder of Dancing With Parkinson’s, witnesses profound transformations in her students. For over 16 years, her program has provided free daily dance classes, helping people move with more ease and joy.

The magic of dance lies in its ability to engage the brain in ways other exercises don’t. It’s not just physical; it’s a mental workout. Cognitive scientist Helena Blumen explains that dance’s intricate multitasking demands enhance neural connections, promoting brain health. In fact, a study from York University found that weekly dance training significantly improved motor function in Parkinson’s patients.

But it’s not just about movement; it’s about music and memory too. Following choreography involves learning patterns, thinking symmetrically, and remembering sequences, which strengthens various brain regions. This mental challenge, combined with the physical activity and the joy of music, creates a unique “pleasure double-play.”

Beyond the brain, dance fosters body acceptance and community. Erica Hornthal, a dance therapist, highlights how dance helps individuals with diseases like MS accept and celebrate their bodies. It’s about moving at your capacity and finding joy in it.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of dance is the community it builds. Dancing together helps combat the loneliness and isolation often felt by those with chronic illnesses. Programs like Dance for PD have spread worldwide, bringing hope and connection to countless individuals.

The National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act has made significant progress, having passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate on May 23, 2024, after a strong bipartisan approval in the House in December 2023. This landmark legislation, supported by The Michael J. Fox Foundation and a coalition of advocates, aims to dramatically increase federal research funding, enhance early diagnosis, develop new treatment pathways, and address health disparities. The Parkinson’s community's tireless advocacy has been crucial in achieving this milestone, marking a hopeful step towards ending Parkinson’s disease.

What Exactly is Rock Steady Boxing

The Rock Steady Boxing program is based on a specific protocol to manage Parkinson’s disease symptoms. It tackles stiffness, balance issues, tremors, coordination problems and weak vocal cords through the mechanics of boxing.

This program includes non-contact boxing techniques, footwork drills, stretching, resistance training, and aerobic conditioning to create a full fitness schedule.

Rock Steady participants go through a series of activities that improve agility with footwork drills, build strength and flexibility, and increase cardiovascular health through heart-pumping aerobics. Each part of this routine is designed to be fun and challenging so boxers stay engaged and motivated throughout the training.

           Non-Contact Boxing for Parkinson’s Patients

Exercise is key to managing Parkinson’s disease and non-contact boxing is an exercise that has shown benefits for people with the condition. Studies have shown that ongoing exercise not only eases physical symptoms but also non-motor symptoms like depression and constipation. Exercise early and often, at least 2.5 hours a week, can slow down the decline for people with Parkinson’s.

Specifically, non-contact boxing training improves motor skills like balance and coordination for people with Parkinson’s. The multi-faceted approach to boxing workouts – hand-eye coordination, quick reaction time, and heightened sensory awareness – is particularly effective against stiffness, shakes (tremors), and bradykinesia that come with the condition.

Non-contact boxing is versatile so it’s available to people of all mobility levels – even wheelchair users – so everyone can experience the benefits of these dynamic workouts no matter their physical ability.

One of the programs offered by Upper Valley is steady boxing under their Rock Steady program. They break down classes into levels according to the stage of the condition of the participant, so they have classes for stage 1-2 and stage 3-4. This way participants get the right intensity of training for their level.

In addition to Rock Steady Boxing, Upper Valley Programs also offers Pedaling for Parkinson’s™ which uses stationary bikes indoors. Research shows that doing this three times a week for 8 weeks can reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease by 35%. These different programs combined form a holistic approach to using exercise to combat the effects of the disease on patients’ lives.

Upper Valley’s Staying Active class is designed to improve and maintain the balance, stability, flexibility, strength, and power of people with Parkinson’s Disease. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday and use different movements and tools to keep participants engaged and challenged.

For people with Parkinson’s disease, it’s important to keep exercising and to do daily tasks in order to preserve mobility and balance. Without movement the disease progresses and joints become less flexible, muscles weaken and cardiovascular health declines. The Staying Active program addresses these concerns by including the following:

           Brain Stimulation and Creativity

Dance has powers beyond the physical, into the cognitive and emotional realms. For people with Parkinson’s, dancing gets the brain going, stimulating executive functions like cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control. The rhythm and flow of dance are not just movements but a language that connects the brain and body, a creative space to express yourself and feel good.

Beyond the brain benefits, dance is a source of joy and pleasure, an emotional boost that’s precious to participants. It’s this combination of physical activity and emotional resonance that gives people with Parkinson’s the energy to face the disease with renewed courage and hope.

Addressing PD Specific Issues Through Movement

To create dance specifically for the Parkinson’s community the ‘Baila Parkinson’ method is the pioneer. By mixing different dance styles, this method addresses the specific needs of people with Parkinson’s. Each step and gesture is designed to navigate the complexities of the disease, to translate the therapeutic power of dance into tangible improvements in mobility and quality of life.

This is what makes dance so powerful for Parkinson’s. It’s not just about the dance, it’s about taking back control and feeling a sense of freedom.

Walk into a Dance for PD class and you’ll be met with ballet, modern and jazz. Each style is chosen to build coordination, balance, flexibility and strength in the participants. It’s the dedication and expertise of these teaching artists that makes each class a lesson in dance and a journey of self discovery and empowerment for everyone involved.

The Intersection of Modern Dance and Physical Therapy

Modern dance and physical therapy are at the heart of Dance for PD, a one of a kind approach that combines artistic expression with therapeutic care. The principles of physical therapy, movement control and strength building, are embedded in the modern dance exercises to address the movement challenges of people with Parkinson’s. This allows participants to explore and improve their physicality in a supportive and creative environment.

Ballet movements bring elegance and power into the classes to counteract the stiffness and rigidity that comes with Parkinson’s. The outcome is a sense of flow and continuity that addresses physical needs but also lifts the soul and sense of well being beyond the dance studio.
